Understanding the

Fear Paralysis Reflex

Supporting emotional safety, regulation, confidence, connection, and learning readiness

The Fear Paralysis Reflex is one of the earliest primitive reflexes. It is closely connected to a child's sense of safety, protection, stillness, withdrawal, and response to stress.

As children grow, this reflex needs to become integrated so they can feel safe enough to connect, move, explore, communicate, play, and learn.

When the Fear Paralysis Reflex has not fully integrated, children may appear anxious, withdrawn, overly cautious, easily overwhelmed, frozen, emotionally shut down, resistant to change, or highly sensitive to their environment.

This course helps parents, teachers, educators, and support staff understand the Fear Paralysis Reflex through practical, child-centred strategies.

It is not about labelling children.

It is about understanding what the nervous system may still need.

Why this Course Matters

A child cannot learn well if they do not feel safe.

The Fear Paralysis Reflex is closely connected to emotional regulation, confidence, connection, sensory sensitivity, stress responses, and readiness to engage.

Understanding the Fear Paralysis Reflex helps adults look beneath behaviour and recognise when a child may need support to feel safe, calm, connected, and ready to learn.

A regulated child is a child who feels safe enough to learn.
