Understanding the Rooting Reflex

Supporting feeding foundations, oral-motor development, facial awareness, speech readiness, regulation, and learning foundations

The Rooting Reflex is an early primitive reflex that supports a baby's first feeding responses and helps them locate the breast or bottle for feeding.

As children grow, the Rooting Reflex needs to become inhibited so they can develop more mature oral control, speech sounds, feeding skills, facial awareness, and self-regulation.

When the Rooting Reflex has not fully inhibited, children may experience challenges with oral sensitivity, dribbling, messy eating, speech clarity, chewing, fussy eating, thumb sucking, mouthing objects, and facial touch sensitivity.

This course helps parents, teachers, educators, and support staff understand the Rooting Reflex through practical, child-centred strategies.

It is not about labelling children.

It is about understanding what the body may still need.

Why this Course Matters

Children's development is built through the whole body — including the mouth, face, senses, and early feeding patterns.

The Rooting Reflex is closely connected to feeding, oral awareness, facial sensitivity, speech readiness, comfort, regulation, and learning readiness.

Understanding the Rooting Reflex helps adults look beneath behaviour and recognise the oral-motor and sensory foundations that support eating, communication, confidence, and learning.

A moving child is a learning child.
