Understanding the Moro Reflex

Supporting emotional regulation, sensory confidence, movement, attention, and learning readiness

The Moro Reflex, often known as the startle reflex, is one of the earliest primitive reflexes. It helps babies respond to sudden changes in sound, movement, touch, light, or position.

As children grow, the Moro Reflex needs to become inhibited so they can develop stronger emotional regulation, sensory processing, movement confidence, attention, and readiness for learning.

When the Moro Reflex has not fully inhibited, children may appear easily startled, anxious, reactive, overwhelmed, emotionally sensitive, impulsive, distracted, or constantly on alert.

This course helps parents, teachers, educators, and support staff understand the Moro Reflex through practical, child-centred strategies.

It is not about labelling children.

It is about understanding what the body and nervous system may still need.

Why this Course Matters

A child who feels constantly on alert may find learning, listening, playing, and participating much harder than it looks.

The Moro Reflex is closely connected to emotional regulation, sensory processing, movement confidence, attention, and learning readiness.

Understanding the Moro Reflex helps adults look beneath behaviour and recognise when a child may need support to feel safe, calm, and organised.

A regulated child is a child who feels safe enough to learn.
