Understanding the Palmar Reflex

Supporting fine motor development, hand control, pencil grip, and learning readiness

The Palmar Reflex is one of the early primitive reflexes that supports a baby’s first grasping movements.

When a baby’s palm is touched, the fingers naturally close around the object. This earlyreflex has an important purpose in infancy, but as the child grows, it needs to becomeinhibited so more mature hand movements can develop.

When the Palmar Reflex has not fully inhibited, children may find fine motor tasks moredifficult. This can affect hand strength, pencil grip, drawing, cutting, writing, self-helpskills, and confidence with everyday learning tasks.

This course helps parents, teachers, educators, and support staff understand thePalmar Reflex in a practical, child-centred way.

It is not about labelling children.

It is about understanding what the body may still need.

Why this Course Matters

Before we ask a child to write, cut, draw, button, zip, or hold a pencil correctly, we need to ask: Are the child’s hands developmentally ready?

Fine motor development does not begin with a pencil. It begins with the body, the brain, the senses, and early movement patterns.

The Palmar Reflex is part of this foundation.

When we understand the Palmar Reflex, we can look beyond behaviour, avoidance, messy work, poor grip, or “not trying”, and begin to support the child through practical,

movement-rich experiences.
