Understanding the Tonic

Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR)

Supporting posture, balance, muscle tone, movement, attention, and learning readiness

The Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) is an important primitive reflex that supports a baby's early relationship with gravity, posture, movement, and balance.

As children grow, the TLR needs to become inhibited so they can develop stronger postural control, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and readiness for learning.

When the TLR has not fully inhibited, children may experience challenges with posture, balance, muscle tone, sitting still, movement confidence, coordination, attention, and body control.

This course helps parents, teachers, educators, and support staff understand the TLR through practical, child-centred strategies.

It is not about labelling children.

It is about understanding what the body may still need.

Why this Course Matters

Children do not learn from the neck up. They learn through the whole body.

The TLR is closely connected to posture, balance, gravity, muscle tone, movement control, and learning readiness.

Understanding the TLR helps adults look beneath behaviour and recognise the physical foundations that support learning, attention, and participation.

A moving child is a learning child.
